Course closed:

Economics and Data Science is no longer accepting new applications.

Teaching

Students are strongly encouraged to attend the online preparatory course in Mathematics and Statistics in September.

Each student will take 7 compulsory modules, two optional modules and write a dissertation of up to 10,000 words.  The modules are a mixture of 18, 24 or 27 hours of lectures, supplemented by classes in the compulsory modules. A supervisor is appointed for every student to provide guidance in developing the skills necessary to carry out the project.

Part-time study is delivered at 0.5 FTE (full-time equivalent).

One to one supervision

2 hours of individual supervision for the dissertation component.

The °Ç¸ç³Ô¹Ï publishes an annual Code of Practice which sets out the University’s expectations regarding supervision.

Seminars & classes

54 hours of classes and 20 hours of seminars/group presentations per year.

Lectures

The total number of lecture hours for the course is 159 hours per year.

The online preparatory course consists of an additional 51 hours of lecture time.

Feedback

There is a test on the material covered in the preparatory course which is marked on a pass/fail basis. The test is formative and does not contribute to the overall mark for the MPhil, but failing this preparatory course will indicate that a student will need to improve their mathematical and statistical skills to cope with the main part of the course.

There are some practice exams in January and students receive feedback on their performance.

Classes in problem sets take place for compulsory modules.

Each student receives individual supervision for the dissertation component.

Assessment

Thesis / Dissertation

Students submit a dissertation of up to 10,000 words in June.

Other

Mid-Course examinations will be held for the Microeconomics and Econometrics Modules and are  held in the week prior to the beginning of the Lent Term.  The examinations will be of 1.5, 2, or 3 hours’ duration.  These mock exams will give students the opportunity to practice under examination conditions for the formal April-June examinations, and will also give a good indication of progress.
