Funding Opportunities
Studentships offered by AHRC, ESRC, and NERC, as well as other funding opportunities, may be available. Details, eligibility criteria and application deadlines can be found . If a candidate wishes to be considered for a Research Council studentship, they should indicate this on their application form.
Eligible applications received by the will be considered for NERC-funded studentships. A full studentship will cover the cost of fees at the home rate and a maintenance allowance. Students with overseas-fee status will need to secure additional funds to provide the fee difference. For this reason, applicants seeking NERC funding are strongly advised to submit their application by the department's December funding competition deadline to be considered for all eligible sources of funding.

Students may have to bear additional costs in relation to PhD-associated fieldwork and/or research trips. These will be bespoke to the individual student and project, and applicants should discuss any potential additional costs with their intended Supervisor prior to application. Once students are in the Institute Department, there are limited funds for which students can apply to cover such additional costs. However, this is likely to be insufficient to cover all costs, so students may have to find additional funding elsewhere, e.g., University/College funding.
Applicants for research in polar studies should select the following course: PhD (probationary) in Polar Studies at the Scott Polar Research Institute. The Institute/Department will then decide into which category – Polar Studies (Natural Science) or Polar Studies (Social Sciences and Humanities) – your application falls. This will affect the level of fees paid by applicants with overseas fee status.
If you study part-time, the University Composition Fee will be 60% of the annual full-time fee for 5 years; or 75% of the annual full-time fee for 4 years. Guidance on calculation of your maintenance costs can be found here: Maintenance costs for part-time students | Postgraduate Study (cam.ac.uk)
