Continuing students

You'll be applying as a Continuing Student if you're currently, or have previously been, registered as a postgraduate student at �Ǹ�Թ�.

This includes students on a PhD, MPhil, MRes, MSt, MASt, LLM, MCL, MMus, MEd, Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate in Advanced Study in Mathematics (Part III Maths).

Please note that all applicants, including continuing students, must provide all the supporting documents as shown in the course directory. Your application will not be considered complete until all documents have been uploaded.

College choice

If a conditional offer of continuation is made, your application will be forwarded to Colleges for consideration.

You may choose up to two Colleges to consider your application. If neither College is able to offer you membership or you do not indicate a preference, your application will be randomly allocated to a College. You can change your College preferences up to the point that you get an offer of admission to the University. You can only ask for this once.
If you would like your current College to consider your application, please put this as one of your two choices.
We strongly advise that before you submit your application you contact the Graduate Tutor at the Colleges you state as first and second choice, if these are different to your current College, to find out what their procedures are for continuing students.
You are also advised to contact the Graduate Tutor at your current College to advise of your intentions, as a matter of courtesy.

Undertaking a second degree of the same type

It is not possible to be examined for a degree of the same type at �Ǹ�Թ� more than once. For example, students who have already been examined for an MPhil by Advanced Study at �Ǹ�Թ� may not be examined for an MPhil by Advanced Study at �Ǹ�Թ� again, even if this is in a different subject and whatever the exam outcome the first time.

In exceptional circumstances, the University may accept you on a degree course where you have taken that degree type at �Ǹ�Թ� before. However, if you successfully complete all the academic requirements of the course, you will be awarded only a ‘Certificate of satisfactory completion’.

If you still wish to apply on that basis, you should discuss it with the department responsible for running the course before you make an application. When you apply you should tell the Postgraduate Admissions Office of your position. They will require you to declare that you understand that you will be awarded only a ‘Certificate of satisfactory completion’.

Immigration for current �Ǹ�Թ� students

If the �Ǹ�Թ� is already sponsoring you under Student Visa, you'll be able to continue on to your new postgraduate course with your existing visa if all of the following apply:

your visa is valid (ie has not expired or been curtailed by the Home Office)
your permission expires after the start date of your new course
you fulfil the Student Visa academic progression requirements by having successfully completed the course for which your current visa was granted, or it is deemed ‘highly likely’ you will complete it successfully
you make a Student Visa application within six weeks of your course starting or before your current leave expires, whichever is earlier. You can make an application in the UK for leave to remain under Student Visa and will need to provide evidence of this to your College so your record can be updated. Alternatively you may prefer to apply for a new Student Visa from outside the UK if there is sufficient time between your current course finishing and your new course start date

If your permission expires more than 28 days before the start date of your new course, the Home Office requires you to apply outside the UK. If you apply in the UK, the Home Office will refuse your application.

If you have paid some or all of your fees to your College before you apply for your visa, the Postgraduate Admissions Office (PAO) can update this information on your CAS statement. To enable PAO to add this note, please ask your College to email them the following information:

Total amount paid for University Composition Fee (exact figure required)
Total amount paid for accommodation costs (exact figure required). Please note the Home Office only allows us to show a maximum payment of £1,334.00 Therefore, even if you pay more we cannot show this in your CAS.

Continuing students

Information on this page is additional information for students who have applied for admission as a continuing student.

Applicant Portal and tracking your application

You can track the progress of your application to continue online through your Applicant Portal up until you receive a conditional offer letter. At that point, you will receive access to your Self-Service account, which you should use to continue to track your application.

Academic conditions

Please note that the academic condition for continuation set by your Degree Committee is almost always higher than a 'pass' in the examination of your current course. A pass in the examination, therefore, may not necessarily be sufficient to satisfy the academic condition.

Continuers currently studying at �Ǹ�Թ�

If you are currently studying at �Ǹ�Թ�, the Postgraduate Admissions Office will complete your academic condition when the Degree Committee has communicated to them that you have met the requirements in your academic condition. You do not need to provide the Postgraduate Admissions Office with evidence of your results, and if you do we will be unable to complete the academic condition without the Degree Committee's approval. The date of the Degree Committee meetings are often later than the date required to meet all your offer conditions and the Postgraduate Admissions Office is aware of this.

Continuers studying at another institution

If you are currently studying at another institution, please provide/upload an official final transcript or degree certificate, showing that the degree has been awarded and the grade obtained, if relevant.
