Support for disabled applicants

We welcome applications from disabled students.

The University is committed to supporting all disabled students. This includes students with:

Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder – ADHD
Autism
Sight loss or those who are blind
Hearing loss or those who are d/Deaf
Unseen disabilities and long-term health conditions
Mental health conditions
Mobility and physical impairments
Specific learning difficulties/differences (such as dyslexia and dyspraxia)

Our Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre (ADRC) supports and advises our disabled students. For example, they can help with:  

making recommendations for adjustments in teaching, learning and assessment
support for non-medical assistants providing study skills support, mentoring, and notetaking

Selecting a College preference

If you have specific access requirements, we recommend that you select 2 College preferences when you apply.

You should contact the Colleges that you are interested in to discuss your needs before you apply. Remember you will be a member of your College for the duration of your course.

Funding for disabled applicants 

There are some funds which may be available to support disability-related costs. 

You can search for funding on the ADRC website.

Tell us about your disability

We encourage you to let us know about your disability in your application. This will help us to make reasonable adjustments. For example, if you are invited to interview by your department.

You can give information about your disability in the Equal Opportunity section of your application in the Applicant Portal.

With your permission, the information will be shared with Colleges and your department or faculty. If you're a disabled student, your application will be assessed in the same way as any other application. It will not affect our academic assessment of your application.

If you've been made an offer

If you’re made an offer, we will share any information that you have disclosed about your disability in your application with the Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre (ADRC).

After you're made an offer, you’ll have another opportunity to tell us about your disability and any adjustments that you need. You should do this by contacting the ADRC: disability@admin.cam.ac.uk.

The ADRC will contact you to discuss your requirements and offer advice. For example, access to departments, transport options or adjustments to teaching and assessment. The ADRC will create a student support document. With your permission, they will share this with your College and department.

It is important that you respond to the ADRC as early as possible. This helps to ensure that support and reasonable adjustments can be put in place in good time.

If you have specific accommodation requirements, you should contact the College that has offered you membership to discuss these as soon as possible.

Funding for disabled applicants

Some financial support and funding opportunities may be available for disabled applicants.

If you're awarded funding from one of the seven Research Councils, you will be eligible to apply for Disabled Students' Allowances (DSAs) from your funding body.

If you are a home student funded by a body that does not have Disabled Students' Allowances or if you are applying as a self-funded home postgraduate disabled student, you might be eligible for DSAs from the Students Loan Company to help support you in your postgraduate studies while at �Ǹ�Թ�.

Under UK legislation, the University is required to make reasonable adjustments to make the University accessible to disabled students. In addition, funding is available from the UK government to meet the additional costs of making adjustments for most UK national disabled students.

Since each case is assessed on an individual basis, it is very important that you make your requirements known to the University at the earliest possible opportunity so that we can identify what provision you might require and how it might be funded.

You can also apply for financial assistance with disability-related expenses.

If you are an international student you may be eligible for the International Disabled Students' Fund.

Disabled offer holders

If you are made an offer of admission and you have disclosed a disability, a neurodiverse condition (such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD or autism) or a long-term health or mental health condition, the Accessibility and Disability Resource Centre (ADRC) will be sent the disclosure information. They will then contact you by email to discuss your particular requirements and offer advice and guidance.

It is important that you respond to the ADRC as early as possible. If you did not disclose your disability in your application we would encourage you to contact the ADRC as soon as possible if you are made an offer of admission. Email disability@admin.cam.ac.uk

The staff of the ADRC can advise on helping students to access a range of support provisions including, specific examination/assessment arrangements and support for non-medical assistants such as study skills support, mentoring, notetaking etc.
